Prayer – the most important in the morning and before bed time… and all the time

Devotional

My day planner was bursting at the seams. Each small square on the calendar was crammed with conflicting responsibilities: children’s music lessons or play practice, church meetings, work deadlines. Even brief moments of social life required budgeting well in advance. I was so busy that I resented the time I had to spend sleeping. And in the midst of my over-scheduled life, God continued to call me to spend daily quiet time with Him.

How could I fit in one more thing? Didn’t He understand how important all my activities were? The work of the day insisted on its own urgency, so I often rushed through a token devotion and hurried prayer.

Reading through the Gospels, I discovered that Scripture mentions many times how Jesus went away to pray—sometimes early in the morning, sometimes overnight.

When life is overwhelming, setting aside time for prayer feels counter-intuitive. Surely diving into the work of the day will bring more progress than stepping aside for prayer. Jesus understood the pressure of time. His brief years of ministry were limited, and there were so many people who needed truth, forgiveness, healing. His disciples needed to be taught. The Father’s plan needed to be carried out. Yet He made prayer a priority.

As busy as my life might be, I will never carry the weight of responsibility that Jesus did. He came to redeem the entire human race. Yet instead of frantic urgency, He consistently modeled a life of prayer, of retreat, of seeking a quiet place.

Martin Luther said, “I have so much to do that I shall spend the first three hours in prayer.” That level of commitment, along with the consistent example of Jesus, inspires me to find my own solitary space and time each day to spend time in prayer.

Faith Step: If your day feels too full, take a risk and schedule some extra prayer first, trusting Jesus to provide what you need for all the other responsibilities.

Be the light for others

You can decide if you will be the darkness,

or you will be the light.

You have the light, deep in your heart

you can shine, you can be bright.

Be like a lighthouse

for those who got lost,

carry the beautiful message through the flame,

shine like a star and save lives.

It is possible, if you believe and trust,

if you will share the gift you received from our Lord.

Happy Sabbath and  a Blessed weekend!

“Love Thy Neighbor as Thyself”

Learning to love ourselves appropriately is vital in winning the fight against insecurity. It is not the kind of self-love that keeps the focus on ourselves, it is a love that frees us to live in the light, to live in the freedom Christ died to give us.

During my journey to freedom I had to face the fact that one of my greatest obstacles was that I did not love myself. There were days I hated myself. I constantly put myself down and the negative thoughts I entertained only pulled me deeper into bondage. I really uncovered a missing piece of the puzzle—learning to love myself.

We’ll continue to exempt ourselves from the promises He gives us until we learn how to receive God’s unconditional love for ourselves. We don’t love ourselves because we are good. We can love and accept ourselves because He is good, and we are His creation.

God has always loved us, and still does. He accepts you under the grace of Jesus Christ. If God loves you, you are worth loving. What other confirmation do you need? He says to love your neighbor as you love yourself, but how do we expect to obey those words if we don’t even love ourselves? If you want to learn how to love yourself, start in the presence of love.

Trust and love work together in our journey to overcome our insecurities. You can trust God’s Word as truth because you have spent enough time with Him to realize He is trustworthy. In that time you spend, you find Love — God Himself — and love leads us to freedom. But it starts with an active choice to trust what God’s Word says about us is true, and it is an active choice to love ourselves despite how we feel.

The battle for freedom may be fought in the head, but it is won in the heart. How do we win this battle? It takes more than finishing a reading plan, or going to church, serving, and being a good person. It takes time spent in the presence of Jesus. Stopping the busyness, closing the door, and intentionally seeking His heart to find your identity, soaking in His Truth until you are changed. Seeking His heart is a dying practice, but if you want to win this battle for freedom you cannot let it die with you.

Truth is the Key that Sets Us Free

Devotional

“Truth is the Key that Sets Us Free”

I can honestly tell you that I believe God has revealed to me the secret of overcoming insecurity. I know what it is like to live in bondage and I know what it’s like to live in freedom and freedom is better. Do I still have moments of worry, self-doubt and uncertainty? Yes, but I no longer live in that prison. I have found the key and my prayer is that through this knowledge you will find that same freedom for your own life.

The key that unlocks those chains, the secret to overcoming insecurity, the power we have been given to fight off the lies, is Truth. If believing lies keeps us in the bondage of insecurity then certainly believing truth is the key that sets us free. If we do not know the truth, we do not know freedom. But what is truth, and how do we use it to unlock the prison of insecurity?

In His three years of ministry Jesus called Himself many things. But no synonym for the name of Jesus is more powerful than “I am the Way, the Truth and the Life” (John 14:6). Jesus is the Truth, and a relationship with Him is the only way we will ever know true freedom.

You may already have a relationship with Jesus. Perhaps you’ve been following Him for some time, you go to church, occasionally read the Word, serve others, and live a generally good life. Yet, many people with a relationship with Jesus are still struggling to break free from the hurts and hang-ups in their life. Having a relationship with Jesus is simply where we start. To continue growing we must use the resources He’s given us as weapons in this battle. The number one resource we have is His Word.

Sadly, many Christ-followers either aren’t in the Word on a regular basis, or if they are, simply check it off as another to-do. We forget that His Word is the Ring of Keys which unlock the ancient, iron-walled doors of insecurity in our lives. Your enemy knows this and will do anything he can to keep you from picking up the Word because he sees it for what it is: A weapon that cuts to the quick of his deception, a key that frees his captives, and a standard to which everything should be compared.
