Truth is the Key that Sets Us Free

Devotional

“Truth is the Key that Sets Us Free”

I can honestly tell you that I believe God has revealed to me the secret of overcoming insecurity. I know what it is like to live in bondage and I know what it’s like to live in freedom and freedom is better. Do I still have moments of worry, self-doubt and uncertainty? Yes, but I no longer live in that prison. I have found the key and my prayer is that through this knowledge you will find that same freedom for your own life.

The key that unlocks those chains, the secret to overcoming insecurity, the power we have been given to fight off the lies, is Truth. If believing lies keeps us in the bondage of insecurity then certainly believing truth is the key that sets us free. If we do not know the truth, we do not know freedom. But what is truth, and how do we use it to unlock the prison of insecurity?

In His three years of ministry Jesus called Himself many things. But no synonym for the name of Jesus is more powerful than “I am the Way, the Truth and the Life” (John 14:6). Jesus is the Truth, and a relationship with Him is the only way we will ever know true freedom.

You may already have a relationship with Jesus. Perhaps you’ve been following Him for some time, you go to church, occasionally read the Word, serve others, and live a generally good life. Yet, many people with a relationship with Jesus are still struggling to break free from the hurts and hang-ups in their life. Having a relationship with Jesus is simply where we start. To continue growing we must use the resources He’s given us as weapons in this battle. The number one resource we have is His Word.

Sadly, many Christ-followers either aren’t in the Word on a regular basis, or if they are, simply check it off as another to-do. We forget that His Word is the Ring of Keys which unlock the ancient, iron-walled doors of insecurity in our lives. Your enemy knows this and will do anything he can to keep you from picking up the Word because he sees it for what it is: A weapon that cuts to the quick of his deception, a key that frees his captives, and a standard to which everything should be compared.

Such an amazing tiny creature! Working hard, so we can enjoy the sweet fruits and honey.
Thank You, Lord for this little helper, who is doing a great work.

All hard work brings a profit, but mere talk leads only to poverty.

There’s No Such Thing As a Wireless Anchor

The thing about anchors is that to be effective, they must be attached to something. There is always a connection: a rope or a chain. They aren’t wireless and can’t be connected by Bluetooth. That connection is every bit as vital as the anchor itself. It doesn’t matter how securely that big hunk of metal is wedged into the ocean floor—if you’re not tied to it, it’s not the least bit helpful. The chain matters greatly.

The wonderful thing about the anchor of the soul is that it, too, comes equipped with a mighty chain. Hope has a rope: the Holy Spirit. Before entering God’s presence in the ascension, Jesus promised to send his Spirit to be our helper. He is our great rope that cannot be frayed, the one who has lashed our hearts to heaven. Through the Spirit we have an everlasting guarantee, a down payment on the life that is to come. He is the proof that there is more in store and that death is not the end.

In times of overwhelming sadness, your anchor should strengthen you, but you should also be encouraged by the chain.

There Is No Magic Map

In the years I’ve been a Christian I’ve discovered that there is no magic map for navigating your way to the epic life God has called you to. Life in real time is messy. The fingerprints of God are often invisible until you look at them in the rearview mirror.

We treat the subject of God’s will as though it were this crazy, exotic mysterious thing, but in truth it’s far less cryptic than that. Discerning God’s calling is more a relationship than a route, more journey than destination. It’s about who you are becoming more than where you are going. Perhaps it’s less about what you do and more about how well you do whatever you do. It’s not something you have to sit around waiting for; it’s something that’s all around you, even now. It’s here and it’s ready, if you would just open your eyes.

We get hung up on the particulars of God’s concealed will, but—assuming you are walking with him and obeying his revealed will—you can do what you want or go where you want and trust that he is the one leading and guiding through your thoughts and desires.

Angry Gus

Angry Gus

Each winter swan males are fighting for their territory on the river. This shot was taken in winter 2008. Gus showed us how angry he can get and he didn’t allow to any swan enter his territory. They should swim far from his territory, but as soon as they entered the invisible borders he immediately attacked them.

Anger

It loves to be fed
by delicious thoughts
and become yellowish red,
burning you from inside out,
giving you only nasty words.
Poisoning your mind and soul
and have you fully under control.
Don’t let it get you destroy,
your weapons are love and joy.

A wise person is hungry for knowledge, while the fool feeds on trash

You’re Responsible for What You Allow in Your Mind
by Rick Warren

“A wise person is hungry for knowledge, while the fool feeds on trash.” (Proverbs 15:14 NLT, second edition)

Our minds control everything else about us. Our thoughts influence our feelings. Our feelings impact our actions.

What you think matters, because everything starts in the mind. To be a responsible person, you have to control your thoughts.

But let me relieve you of a little false guilt: You’re not responsible for every stray thought that passes through your mind. Stray thoughts enter our minds for a variety of reasons — conversations you hear by accident, things you see, stuff the devil puts in your mind, etc.

You’re responsible for how you deal with those stray thoughts. Martin Luther said it like this: “You can’t keep the birds from flying over your head, but you can keep them from building a nest in your hair.”

God will hold you accountable for what you allow to enter your mind.

I’m amazed by what some people watch — not to mention what they let their children watch. Many true followers of Jesus spend their time watching trashy TV and listening to trashy radio. They pay good money to see deviant behavior as entertainment. People watching such shows have told me, “When I go see those kinds of things, it just doesn’t phase me. It doesn’t bother me. It doesn’t affect me.”

But that’s just not true!

Scientists have done study after study that says you never really forget any scene you see. Even if you don’t consciously recall the scene, that idea will come right back to your mind — in living color — when something else stimulates the thought.

In other words, “Garbage in, garbage out.” What you put into your mind will inevitably bear fruit in your behavior and beliefs. In fact, when trashy entertainment doesn’t bother you anymore, it’s a warning light that you’ve already passed the threshold.

One of Satan’s greatest tricks for attracting you to sinful lifestyles is comedy. That’s why on television or in movies, deviant behavior always starts in a comedic situation. If Satan can get you laughing at something that is sinful, you’ve already lost the battle.

Sin isn’t funny. Sin put Jesus on the cross.
