Truth is the Key that Sets Us Free

Devotional

“Truth is the Key that Sets Us Free”

I can honestly tell you that I believe God has revealed to me the secret of overcoming insecurity. I know what it is like to live in bondage and I know what it’s like to live in freedom and freedom is better. Do I still have moments of worry, self-doubt and uncertainty? Yes, but I no longer live in that prison. I have found the key and my prayer is that through this knowledge you will find that same freedom for your own life.

The key that unlocks those chains, the secret to overcoming insecurity, the power we have been given to fight off the lies, is Truth. If believing lies keeps us in the bondage of insecurity then certainly believing truth is the key that sets us free. If we do not know the truth, we do not know freedom. But what is truth, and how do we use it to unlock the prison of insecurity?

In His three years of ministry Jesus called Himself many things. But no synonym for the name of Jesus is more powerful than “I am the Way, the Truth and the Life” (John 14:6). Jesus is the Truth, and a relationship with Him is the only way we will ever know true freedom.

You may already have a relationship with Jesus. Perhaps you’ve been following Him for some time, you go to church, occasionally read the Word, serve others, and live a generally good life. Yet, many people with a relationship with Jesus are still struggling to break free from the hurts and hang-ups in their life. Having a relationship with Jesus is simply where we start. To continue growing we must use the resources He’s given us as weapons in this battle. The number one resource we have is His Word.

Sadly, many Christ-followers either aren’t in the Word on a regular basis, or if they are, simply check it off as another to-do. We forget that His Word is the Ring of Keys which unlock the ancient, iron-walled doors of insecurity in our lives. Your enemy knows this and will do anything he can to keep you from picking up the Word because he sees it for what it is: A weapon that cuts to the quick of his deception, a key that frees his captives, and a standard to which everything should be compared.

There’s No Such Thing As a Wireless Anchor

The thing about anchors is that to be effective, they must be attached to something. There is always a connection: a rope or a chain. They aren’t wireless and can’t be connected by Bluetooth. That connection is every bit as vital as the anchor itself. It doesn’t matter how securely that big hunk of metal is wedged into the ocean floor—if you’re not tied to it, it’s not the least bit helpful. The chain matters greatly.

The wonderful thing about the anchor of the soul is that it, too, comes equipped with a mighty chain. Hope has a rope: the Holy Spirit. Before entering God’s presence in the ascension, Jesus promised to send his Spirit to be our helper. He is our great rope that cannot be frayed, the one who has lashed our hearts to heaven. Through the Spirit we have an everlasting guarantee, a down payment on the life that is to come. He is the proof that there is more in store and that death is not the end.

In times of overwhelming sadness, your anchor should strengthen you, but you should also be encouraged by the chain.

Turn Off the Dark

Death is what Christmas is all about. Jesus came to turn off the darkness of death by turning on the Light. Hebrews 2:15 says Jesus came to release those “who through fear of death were all their lifetime subject to bondage” Christmas exists so there could be an Easter, so we could live with hope and die without fear.

Jesus is the wonderful counselor who was sent to us to give us wisdom and free us from what frightens us. We live in very uncertain times. The economy seems fragile, and natural disasters lurk around every corner. They don’t all make the news, but there is a mass murder in America every two weeks.* Like the light that causes cockroaches to scatter, the presence of Jesus’ perfect love in the human heart drives out all fear.

Death has been stripped of its power. Jesus took the bullets out of the devil’s gun. Satan can still pull the trigger, but there are only blanks in the chamber. Instead of being terrified, we can actually look at death victoriously. This is what Paul meant when he said Jesus has abolished death.
