Letting Go and Taking Hold

A common misconception among believers is that if you are truly spiritually oriented, you will not struggle with following God’s will. Jesus’ own actions teach that this belief just isn’t so. Jesus’ final moments before his crucifixion were spent in prayer in the Garden of Gethsemane. Gethsemane in Aramaic means “oil press.” This garden area on the Mount of Olives was used to press the olives grown on the mountain into olive oil. And this garden was a fitting image for the pressure Jesus underwent as he faced the call to the cross.

In Gethsemane, Jesus prayed three times. Each prayer was a step toward releasing the things that could hold him back from taking hold of God’s will. The first prayer, an outburst of grief, was the step of realization, of feeling the full impact of his mission. Jesus shuddered in the chill of death’s dark shadow. Prayer was his only refuge. He longed for his companions to comfort and support him, but they slept.

The second prayer was one of release. Jesus was faced with two choices: If he saved his own life, he would lose us because he would not have achieved salvation for us. But if he lost his life, he would save us. Jesus desired to do the will of his Father, so he accepted his calling to die for us. The Father’s will became Jesus’ will.

The third prayer strengthened his resolve. Like the tempering of steel when refined metal is heated a second time to increase its strength or like a soldier getting ready for battle or a patient preparing for a difficult surgery, so Jesus gathered strength from his Father for his upcoming task. Jesus left all his anxiety with him.

What we keep from God also keeps us from God. What we give to God becomes a channel for giving ourselves to God. Prayer enables us to travel the journey from realization to release and from release to resolve. We see this same process at work in the apostle Paul. He also prayed three times for relief from his thorn in the flesh. Each time God told him, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness” (2 Corinthians 12:9). This word enabled Paul to accept his situation and allow the power of Christ in his life to be made clear to all.

I Seek a Homeland

We must face up and then fess up to the fact that we are pilgrims. We need to tell ourselves that we are strangers and aliens and plainly declare that our home country is heaven.

My wife put a sign on the wall on her side of our bedroom that says, “I seek a homeland.” It is the first thing she sees when she sits up to get out of bed. She wants putting this perspective on to be part of her daily routine, just like getting dressed and brushing her teeth. It’s a daily choice, not a one-time thing.

The more passionate you are about setting your soul to heaven’s time zone, the more progress you will make in your calling here on earth. There is no greater aid to holy living than living in light of the glory that is to come when Christ returns, or when we die and stand before him.

Thinking of what you want to be found doing during Christ’s return is an incredible motivator. Focus on it often.

There’s No Such Thing As a Wireless Anchor

The thing about anchors is that to be effective, they must be attached to something. There is always a connection: a rope or a chain. They aren’t wireless and can’t be connected by Bluetooth. That connection is every bit as vital as the anchor itself. It doesn’t matter how securely that big hunk of metal is wedged into the ocean floor—if you’re not tied to it, it’s not the least bit helpful. The chain matters greatly.

The wonderful thing about the anchor of the soul is that it, too, comes equipped with a mighty chain. Hope has a rope: the Holy Spirit. Before entering God’s presence in the ascension, Jesus promised to send his Spirit to be our helper. He is our great rope that cannot be frayed, the one who has lashed our hearts to heaven. Through the Spirit we have an everlasting guarantee, a down payment on the life that is to come. He is the proof that there is more in store and that death is not the end.

In times of overwhelming sadness, your anchor should strengthen you, but you should also be encouraged by the chain.

There Is No Magic Map

In the years I’ve been a Christian I’ve discovered that there is no magic map for navigating your way to the epic life God has called you to. Life in real time is messy. The fingerprints of God are often invisible until you look at them in the rearview mirror.

We treat the subject of God’s will as though it were this crazy, exotic mysterious thing, but in truth it’s far less cryptic than that. Discerning God’s calling is more a relationship than a route, more journey than destination. It’s about who you are becoming more than where you are going. Perhaps it’s less about what you do and more about how well you do whatever you do. It’s not something you have to sit around waiting for; it’s something that’s all around you, even now. It’s here and it’s ready, if you would just open your eyes.

We get hung up on the particulars of God’s concealed will, but—assuming you are walking with him and obeying his revealed will—you can do what you want or go where you want and trust that he is the one leading and guiding through your thoughts and desires.

This is my beloved Son

Inspired by the Bible scriptures of Matthew 3

This is my beloved Son

There was a peaceful sunny day
when John the Baptist stood
in the river called Jordan.
He baptized a crowd of people
who confessed their sins.
He was preaching and said
he is baptizing only with water
but soon will come He,
a prophet who is greater than him
and will make amazing things
and baptize with the Holy Ghost.

Then he saw Him, the Lamb of God
entering the river He came to John
to be baptized of him.
And after the water touched His head
He walked out of the Jordan
and the heavens were opened
and a white dove – the Holy Spirit
sat on his shoulder.
Then a soft voice came from heavens:
‘This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.’
